Arbitration in Agribusiness

Demarest Advogados, one of the most prestigious law firms in Brazil, in partnership with the Brazilian Rural Society (Sociedade Rural Brasileira - SRB), hosted a debate on arbitration in agribusiness, on April 13, in São Paulo. The meeting gathered sector leaders and renowned legal specialists linked to large companies.

The event was opened by Marcos Fava Neves, a professor at FEA/USP and a specialist in Strategic Management and Planning of Market-Oriented Companies. He is also the founder of Markestrat, a project and research organization formed by specialists with Master's and Doctoral degree in Business. Neves talked about integrated contract network that may increase the potential of agroindustrial chains.

In the panel that followed, Eduardo Andretto, Chief Legal Officer of Fibria, Renato Buranello, partner at Demarest Advogados, and the mediator Francisco de Godoy Bueno, Vice President of SRB, talked about contracts in agribusiness and arbitration.

The second panel had the participation of Marcelo Inglez de Souza, Arbitration Partner at Demarest Advogados, Marina Souza, Lawyer and Master in Civil Law from University of Lisbon, and the mediator, Thiago Marinho Nunes, President of the Mediation and Arbitration Committee of the Mediation and Arbitration Chamber of the Brazilian Rural Society (CARB). They discussed the major challenges faced by the agribusiness in arbitration cases.

The event was closed by Marinho Nunes who stressed the need of the Brazilian agribusiness debating alternatives to reduce its dependence on the Brazilian overloaded justice system.
