Municipal Government of São Paulo brings forward five public holidays to contain the spread of COVID-19

On March 19, 2021, Municipal Decree 60,131/2021 was published in the Official Gazette of the Municipality of São Paulo, providing for the bringing forward of the 2021 public holidays of Corpus Christi and Black Consciousness Day, as well as the 2022 public holidays of São Paulo’s Anniversary, Corpus Christi, and Black Consciousness Day.

The action, which aims to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the city of São Paulo, as well as the movement of people throughout the city, establishes the days of March 26, 29, 30 and 31 and April 1 as public holidays in the capital of São Paulo. The extended holiday will therefore commence on Friday, March 26 and will last until the following Sunday, April 4, given that Friday, April 2 will be a national holiday (Good Friday).

Municipal Decree 60,131/2021, additionally, establishes that the measure of advance holidays will not apply to:

i. health units;

ii. the urban security sector;

iii. social assistance units;

iv. funeral services; and

v. to other activities that cannot undergo suspension. However, the text of the Decree does not define these other activities that cannot be suspended.
