“I’ve been at Demarest for about two and a half years. The opportunity for secondment came when I was at the end of the Trainee Program, 2016 edition. The trip and the job were part of the award for the best-performing trainee in the firm. I was able to live this experience in a partner office in Colombia for a month and a half and it was an incredible to be able to experience and practice law in Colombia.
As soon as I arrived, the entire team of firm partners were very willing and helpful with me— from assisting with an overview of Colombian jurisdiction, which included opportunities to participate in hearings, to step-by-step review of procedural strategies in key cases, as well as collaboration in the drafting of Comparative Law articles, among other day-to-day tasks.
The experience in these 45 days of secondment in Colombia has been enriching: I also had the opportunity to immerse in Colombian culture, learning and history. In my free time, I have managed to travel a lot and get to know different parts of the country, from settings such as Medellín post-Pablo Escobar, passing through the metropolitan Bogota, to Cartagena, birthplace of the writer Gabriel García Márquez.
Although it seems to have been a short time in Colombia, every second of this experience has been invaluable. Whether for the legal aspects of the Colombian jurisdiction that I have learned, or for the beautiful landscapes that I can visit, or indeed for the cultural differences that I am becoming acquainted with and embracing.”
