Partner of Demarest’s Tax area, Christiano Chagas Monteiro de Melo holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). He concentrates his practice in tax planning in the financial and capital markets, international taxation and foreign investment in Brazil. He has also worked on tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity issuance transactions, structuring of investment funds and tax administrative proceedings. Christiano is listed as a tax leader in leading local and international legal publications such as Chambers & Partners, The Legal 500, Latin Lawyer 250, LACCA Approved and International Tax Review.

  • Assists banks with consultative and advisory services in numerous cases and transactions – especially in foreign investments, local investments in the financial and capital markets, international loan operations, local loan operations, investment funds, IPOs, public stock offers, transfer pricing, thin capitalization, treaties to avoid double taxation, export financing, import financing and other products.
  • Advised Citibank following a reorganization of its tax area in Brazil, involving all consultative and litigious issues and which received a full-time “secondment” in the area.
  • Advised Incor, through Incor Natal, in its JV with NHC (Natal Hospital Center), of the Delfin Group, for the creation of the Rio Grande Hospital (HRG).
  • Advised Citrico, a European leader in the production and sale of fresh citrus fruits, in the phased takeover operation with the initial acquisition of 49% of Agrícola Famosa Ltda. and an option to acquire an additional 16%, raising its stake to 65%.
  • Advised Focus Energia Holding Participações S.A. and selling shareholders in the initial public offering of (i) primary distribution of 45,452,830 common shares issued by the Company; and (ii) in the secondary distribution of 424,528 common shares issued by the Company, all registered, book-entry and without par value, issued by the Company, in the total amount of BRL 772 million.
